Mystery Fruit?

Being adventurous with food has wonderful rewards. I love to try new things and am always excited when I find something I've never eaten. When my little sister was littler, it was a game we would play. We would choose something new in the produce area to try and she could also have a flavored milk as a treat after our grocery trips. Vanilla milk is still my favorite "treat" from the grocery!

Recently I was browsing in the produce section of my local supermarket (am I the only one who does this?) considering what foods I wanted to eat for the week when noticed an unusual fruit. It was piled up next to the grapefruits, but was at least three times their size. This very large fruit was about the size of a human head...okay, maybe a little smaller, but not much! It was green and looked a lot like the nearby grapefruits, but much larger and the skin was smoother. Because it was irresistible, I put it in the cart as this trip's treat.

I was shocked when I checked out and the fruit was $5! Undetered, I paid for the citrus fruit and considered it R&D cost. I noticed the sticker on the fruit that said "Pomelo". When I got home, I immediately cut the fruit into pieces. Because it was so large, it provided about a dozen good sized slices. The inside flesh was a brilliant pink-red with a thick white pith. It was slightly juicy, but not too much. It looked like a grapefruit, but didn't appear to have the same kind of sections. I took a taste...it was tart, but much sweeter and milder than a grapefruit, almost like candy. It was delicious!

Later, I did a little online research and discovered that the Pomelo is believed to be the precursor to the modern grapefruit. Originating in Southeast Asia, this uncommon fruit is a member of the citrus family is high in fiber . One cup serves up less than 75 calories and nearly twice your RDA for Vitamin C. Most of all...it's yummy!
