Recently, I had lunch with a friend that I'm just getting to know and she recommended that we meet at Alon's, which is a wonderful bakery/prepared foods/gourmet grocery. I just love Alon's and was thrilled that she suggested it. After taking the tour around the restaurant and leaning into the glass cases to take everything in, I settled on a simple lunch. So simple, in fact, I can't remember what I had! What I can remember, besides the wonderful conversation, was dessert.
Since it is 100 degrees here in Atlanta all the time right now, a cold dessert was required eating. Alon's has fantastic gelato. Gelato is a great dessert for those worried about baring the bod at the beach...since it's made with milk and fruit, instead of cream, it is lower in fat and calories. What's more, it is higher in air, which gives it a light texture adding to its luxuriousness. I had baci, which means kisses... enough said... it was delish! Fortunately, the portions were small so a little indulgence was still manageable and just what I needed to knock off some of the summer heat.
The best part of the afternoon? Discovering that my new friend is a fellow foodie. Even the best gelato can be made better when enjoyed with a friend.
